Boston Scientific Names Joseph M. Fitzgerald COO in Executive Reorganization
Boston Scientific announced the appointment of Joseph M. Fitzgerald as chief operating officer effective Jan. 1, 2027, alongside a reorganization into three reportable segments.

Boston Scientific announced the appointment of Joseph M. Fitzgerald to executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO), effective Jan. 1, 2027. In this role, Fitzgerald will oversee the company's global operations, business units and regions.
In connection with Fitzgerald's appointment, Boston Scientific will establish three reportable segments effective Jan. 1: Interventional Therapies, Rhythm Solutions and MedSurg. The leaders of all three segments will report directly to Fitzgerald.
New Structure Aims to Accelerate Decision Making and Portfolio Investment
According to the company, the new operating structure is designed to enable faster decision making and support strategic allocation of investments across its portfolio.
Mike Mahoney, chairman and chief executive officer of Boston Scientific, stated that the new operating model will create greater capacity to focus on long-term growth priorities while enabling businesses to move faster and remain close to customers and patients. Mahoney added: “Joe’s deep knowledge of our business and markets, strategic leadership and strong track record of execution make him well suited for this role.”
Leadership Appointments Draw from Existing Executive Ranks
Fitzgerald currently serves as executive vice president and group president, Cardiovascular, at Boston Scientific before stepping into the chief operating officer role.
Lance Bates, executive vice president and president, Interventional Therapies, will lead the global Interventional Therapies segment. Nick Spadea-Anello, executive vice president and president, Atrial Fibrillation Solutions, will lead the global Rhythm Solutions segment. Stephen Morse, senior vice president and president, Asia Pacific, will serve as executive vice president and president, MedSurg and Asia Pacific.
